Before Surgery
Before any surgery is performed on our patients, we take great
care to explain in detail the alternatives to surgery. Some people have used
trusses or belts which serve to irritate the hernia and worsen the scarring
around the hernia. Although a truss may diminish some of the symptoms,
inevitably surgery still must be performed. The open and laparoscopic techniques
will be reviewed in detail. Pre-operative teaching as to the pathophysiology and
the pros, cons, risks, and benefits of the hernia repair are reviewed. Hernia
surgery is considered minor surgery with inherent minimal risk. The anesthetic
of choice is tailored to the patient's needs desires, and ultimate safety of the
anesthetic technique. Usually, local anesthesia with sedation is preferred.
Almost all hernia repairs are performed as an outpatient or
short overnight hospital stay. That way our patients are able and encouraged to
return to the comfort and privacy of their own home. In the face of any
post-operative problem, the security and safety of the hospital environment is
available.
